A Royal Navy ship standing off Cape Hom watching for competitors in the round-the-world yacht race has sighted three solo yachts not in the race.
After having seen five of the race entries round Cape Horn, the ice patrol ship H.M.S. Endurance spotted two French yachts and an Italian yacht.
Race control in Portsmouth said die Endurance escorted the French yacht Hispania, on her way from Auckland, round the Hom in 50-knot winds, but the other two yachts had not been identified.
With the British yacht Great Britain II reported 900 miles off Rio de Janeiro and three more yachts passing the Falkland Islands, race organisers in Portsmouth gave the over-all position in the third leg, from Sydney to Rio de Janeiro as: Adventure (Britain) 1. Sayula (Mexico) 2, Grand Louis (France) 3, Kriter (France) 4, Gula (Italy) 5, Great Britain II (Britain) 6, Tatiranga (Italy) 7, Cserb (Italy) s.
