Drug report commended
The altitude to drugs shown in the recent Board of Health committee report was commended yesterday by the president of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association (Mr J. J. Benefield). The report on drug dependency and drug abuse in New Zealand was a step in the right direction, said Mr Benefield. “We note with reserved satisfaction the recommendation that penalties for possession and use of marijuana be lessened. The association’s policy is that marijuana cannot be considered a socially dangerous stimulant, and that, accordingly, its possession and use should be legalised in line with legislation on drinking,” he said.
The association recognised the difficulties faced by the authorities in the matter of drugs, but it hoped that the Minister of Health (Mr Tizard) would soon introduce legislation to make possible the complete removal of marijuana from every schedule of prohibited drugs, said Mr Benefield.
