Wool levy issue
The members of the electoral committee of the Wool Board for Canter-bury-Westland and North Canterbury, Messrs M. R. Barnett and R. H. M. Johnston, have called a meeting to be held in the Brevet Club beginning at 8 p.m. next Thursday to give growers in their districts the opportunity of hearing Wool Board members explain the need for an increase in the levy on wool and intentions about a possible change in the method of its collection from a flat rate per kilogram to a percentage basis. In addition to the two electoral committee members it is expected that the chairman of the board, Mr J. Clarke, and aiso Mr
J. D. Mcllraith, a new member of the board, will speak. The board was planning an increase in the levy for the 1974-75 season but since the Government late last year decided to reduce its contribution to the International Wool Secretariat from s4.Bm to s2m it has been necessary to contemplate making a further increase in the levy, and a levy amounting to 3 per cent of gross income has been suggested as a likely figure. Mr Johnston said this week it was hoped that the board members would be able to show that the activities of the International Wool Secretariat warranted further grower support.
