Armed man arrested
Police arrested an armed man in a LandRover near Purau, on the eastern side of Lyttelton Harbour, late last evening after watching the vehicle for more than two hours. The man, aged 20, had earlier stormed out of his home in Waterloo Road, Hornby, after threatening his family with a loaded .303 rifle. A woman, his girlfriend, drove willingly with him to the top of a hill near Purau. The armed offenders squad surrounded the Land-Rover just after 8 p.m., and extra armed policemen; police dogs and a communications vehicle arrived later. Police cordons were set up on the roads, and customers in the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Teddington, were told not to go outside, More than 20 policemen under the command of Detective Inspector R. N. MacDonald had surrounded the Land-Rover by 10 p.m., when they moved in and arrested the man. No shots were fired. The man was taken to the Lyttelton Police Station, and will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge under the Arms Act.
