A carnival day at Riccarton
All the excitement of the show will come to Rlccerton tomorrow. Such event* *, wood-chop-ping, ihoep dog triple, a Maori concert port? .and a traditional Maori war challenge will go o long woy to moklng the Conterbury Jockey Club'* summer meeting on entertolnlng day. The Maori concert party will welcome patrons as they arrive from Inside the main gate, and later, at 12.15 p.m., will perform a tong and oanco In front of the main public grandstand. At 1145 p.m., Mr G. Mclvor will give a commentary on the two wood-choppers, D. McKay and R. Thaln. At 1.40 p.m., Mr R. M. Wilson and his dog, Rote, will give an exhlblßon of controlling sheep In the birdcage end on the track.
Bpfore the feature nee of the day, the $10,250 Benson and Hedge, Inter-Island Handicap, the dub's commentator, Mr R. Murtha, will Introduce the |ockey, to the crowd. After the race, a Maori challenge will be made to the owner of the winning horse. The secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club (Mr W. R. Barberet) laid yesterday that a number of Commonwealth Game, athlete* and officials had accepted Invitation, to attend the meeting. A, well, Invitation, have been extended to the officer* and crew, of the ocean Ilnar* and warship, now at Lyttelton. The club ha, obviously mad* a strong attempt to provide friendly people with a friendly day.
