SHIPPING NEWS

Carnival air at Lyttelton

Lyttelton has never before known such a carnival atmosphere. Yesterday, in brilliant sunshine, hundreds of people, very young and very old, crowded the waterfront. Waterfront workers mingled with sightseers, cruise liner passengers, and girls in bikinis, as though this were normal routine.

Gallv dressed ships in port yesterday included foreigners, notably from Jugoslavia, the Netherlands. Norway. Japan and the United States. The Russian vessel Kotovskiy was not dressed but probably because she was one of three ships forced bv port congestion to anchor in the stream. She berthed in the late afternoon.

I Several visitors have called at the Lyttelton office of "The I Press’’ to mention their appreciation of the organisation for sightseers. These callers in eluded Canterbury people, cruise liner visitors, and some people from Britain. A Lyttelton Harbour Board employee on wharfcleaning duties said he was amazed how little Utter was evident. There was even a traffic officer on duty yesterday at Lyttelton’s busiest’ intersection. which leads to the waterfront. It was hot. thirsty weather and at noon many refreshed themselves in

true carnival atmosphere, although normal port work continued. The destroyer, HM A S Anzac. which is also ■ training vessel, was open to the public yesterday afternoon as an added attraction. Full credit must go. in the opinion of many, to the Lyttelton Harbourmaster (Captain D. Holden* and his staff for skilfully cramming the port so full of interest and also to the Lyttelton Harbour Board's traffic manager (Mr J B Gralu;-i), and his staff, also the reinforced police staff. Customs officials, Lyttelton business folk, and last, but by no means least, the many waterfront workers who have given friendly assistance to visitors on unfamiliar ground.

Mr Graham has again urged visitors to leave vehicles at home, where possible, and to travel by train or bus. to save sore feet and long walks to overflow parking areas. He has also asked visitors to keep to the wharf footwalks clearly marked to allow working and official vehicular traffic to pass.
