Warhurst top walker

The top two Commonwealth road walkers. J. Warhurst and R. Thorpe, I of England, raced shoulder to shoulder for 16 miles of the 20-mile walk yesterday before Warhurst forged ahead to win by nearly four minutes in a time of 2hr 35min 23sec. Third place went to P. Fullager (Australia) in 2hr 42min Bsec, and fourth place went to the fast finishing G. Young (Isle of Man). The best Commonwealth time for the distance is 2hr 33min, set by an Australian, N. Freeman,' at Edinburgh, in 1970. The New Zealand champion, L. Stevenson, finished sixth. The second string New Zealand walker, K. Taylor, was disqualified after two miles. He said after the event that his left leg was numb from a pain-killing injection given to ease pain from a shin injury. Stevenson, aged 26, said he had been walking 100 miles a week in training for yesterday’s race, but felt now ! that he needed to do more to [compete with the top walkers.

Conditions for the race were ideal, and traffic was well controlled by 52 traffic officers and 72 voluntary helpers.
