GHETTO CHILD
The hopes and aspirations of a young Puerto Rican boy living in the ghetto and trying to escape his environment by building an ark .and sailing around the world are captured in a one-hour colour special, "Santiago’s Ark,” which screens on Sunday at 5.35 p.m. "Santiago’s Ark,” as part of the A.B.C. Afterschool Specials, received the Peabody Award for excellence in children’s programming. The “New York Times,” in a feature story on 1972’s best television programmes, called it "a moving portrait about children, dreams and city slums.” The New York Daily News said, "When fiction is so wedded with reality that the result is a totally believable drama that could pass as a documentary-, then we must credit the writer-producer-director ... a warm, wonderful, upbeat hour.” Young Ruben Figueroa, who takes the title role, was featured with Alan Arkin in the film, “Poppo.” “Santiago’s Ark” was produced, written and directed by Albert Waller,
