Aircraft down bank
(NZ. Press Association) GISBORNE. A pilot escaped unhurt on Monday when his topdressing aircraft went off an airstrip and fell 20ft down a steep bank in rugged country at Otoko, about 45 miles from Gisborne. The pilot, Jack Buttolph, of Wairoa, had landed the Fletcher 400 safely when it was apparently caught in a strong wind and pushed over the bank near the end of the strip. Attempts to retrieve the aircraft were unsuccessful, and it was tied by a rope to a manuka tree to prevent it from dropping further.
