Same traffic routes for closing
If motorists travelling tc Queen Elizabeth II Park on Saturday for the Games closing ceremony use the same routes as they did for the opening ceremony there should be no major traffic problems, said the Games traffic planning officer (Chief Traffic Officer R. W. Fox). The closing ceremony is expected to be less formal than the opening and Mr Fox said he hoped motorists would not let the carefree spirit influence their driving. About 160 traffic officers will be on duty on Saturday including those involved in directing traffic during the cycling road race. The Ministry of Transport’s spotter aircraft, which was of great help during the opening ceremony, will again be in the air, said Mr Fox. On the Games opening day, there had been some confusion in the parking of vehicles used by technical officials and news media representatives, said Mr Fox. On Saturday they should travel to the park using Hills Road, Shirley Road, New Brighton Road, Bassett Street, Travis Road, and enter the special car park between Frosts Road and Travis Road. V.LP.s should travel north on Marshland Road, along Mairehau Road, and Beach Road and enter the car park near the Ascot Golf Course. The road cycling course in Cashmere will be closed from 7 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. on Saturday and only official vehicles and emergency services will be permitted in the area, said Mr Fox. From practice runs it was expected that the race will take the full 5J hours. Spectators wishing to watch the race should walk to vantage points along the course.
