Shortage of bitumen
LV.Z. Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH. The National Roads Board would be forced to slow its highway sealing programmes this year and concentrate on bridges because of bitumen shortages, the Minister of Works (Mr Watt) said in New Plymouth. “Bitumen is manufactured from imported heavy oil and the amount available depends on how the oil is broken down at the refinery,” he said.
“It looks as though we will be short of bitumen this year. We are trying to substitute tar as much as possible, but tar is inferior to bitumen for road sealing.” Mr Watt said the supply difficulties meant road sealing would have to be reduced and bridging and earth works accelerated.
