Name of the Games changed again
\lread\ changed twice since 193(1. the title of what was originally the British Empire Games, then the British Empire and Commonwealth Games, then the British Commonwealth Games, has been changed again, and will become simply “The Commonwealth (Janies'.”
Ihe Games Federa- 1 tion. meeting as a general assembly, decided this in Christchurch last evening on the motion of Nigeria, by is votes to seven, the federation’s secretary (Mr K. S. Duncan) said.
When a similar proposal was put forward in Edinburgh four years ago, it was defeated by one vote. The federation’s president, the Duke of Edinburgh, was present at last evening’s meeting, and had said to the 25 (out of about 38) representatives present that the term “the Commonwealth" was widely used, Mr Duncan said. The word “British" would also be dropped from the title of the federation, he said. The federation received; notice of tentative bids for the 1982 Games from five ; countries: Australia, India. Malaysia. Kenya and Nigeria. It was up to the Games as-
sociation of each country to recommend a city when it made a positive bid. Mr Dun-j can said Any definite bids have to' be circulated to all federation members six months before the 1976 meeting in Montreal which will decide the successful country. The federation passed a motion that successive Games should not be awarded to countries in the same con-| tinental zone if there were serious applications from out-j side that zone. A proposal that women's; bowls be included in thei Games was referred to the
federation’s advisory committee. Sir Alexander Ross was re-elected chairman of the federation; Mr M. Mbathi was elected vice-chairman; Mr Duncan was re-elected secretary; and Mr M B Phillips treasurer. Lord Porritt was re-elected a vice-president of the federation Regional representatives elected were: Canada. Colonel J. Davies; Caribbean, i.Mr T. Bridge; Asia. Mr A. 'de Sales; Europe. Mr W. Carmichael; Oceania, Mr W. J. Young (Australia); Africa, Brigadier H. E. O. Adefope.
