Harris brothers may have rewarding day
The Harris brothers, Noe! and Des, have mounts expected to carry off three of the big prizes on the final day of the Wellington Cup meeting today. Noel will ride Jandell in the $24,000 New Zealand Oaks and, ias usual, will partner Glenigowan in the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes. Peg’s Pride will give Des Harris a bright chance of a winning ride in the $BOOO Wellington Racing Club Handicap, first leg of today’s T.A.B. double. Wins in the Avondale and t Waikato Guineas, and a close 1 second to Fury’s Order in the New Zealand Derby practically : assure Jandell of New Zealand Oaks favouritism. She was only half a head from! victory in the New Zealand! Derby at Ellerslie, and Fury’s! | Order had to come up with a ‘run of rare quality to catch her., i Jandell had some talented! !three-year-olds behind her thati day. I Tinryland Lass was third and) i lechyd fifth, after a checked run. In the meantime Fury’s Order and lechyd have been placed in the Wellington Derby, and through that form Jandell goes in to the fillies’ classic with at-1 tractive credentials. i Prepak. winner of the New i Zealand One Thousand Guineas at Riccarton in November, will measure up against any one of [the others for class. Being one of the Pakistan’s, she might not ibe bred on such stout staying [lines as some of the others; but [none would better capitalise on i one of those stop-go races often met with in longer fillies’ i classics.
The talented Auckland jockey, >D. A. Peake, who won the Oaks I on Reachfar at Trentham a year 'ago. will ride Prepak today. I Glengowan’s failure to reach a (Place in the Wellington Cup was disappointing, but lie has lost no ,(stature as a middle distance I weight-for-age performer, and a ‘ second Trentham Stakes victory Ishould be easy for him today. A year ago he was in more 'distinguished company, beating the talented three-year-old, ’Black Rod, the class mare. : Topsy, and the weight-for-age • specialist Bardall. He has since won two more weight-for-age races, in New. I Zealand, the Captain Cook; Stakes at Trentham. in September, and the Pahiatua Weight-|for-age Stakes earlier this (month. Tlie Pahiatua club's feature [race was Glengowan’s only race [as a lead-up to the Wellington I I Cup. At least one more would (have had a horse of such robust; ‘ physique in better shape for a [long, hard race like the Wellington Cup. Battle Heights, the Wellington! I Cup winner and Rose Mellay,! [which was third, will oppose I [Glengowan today. But this titne[ [Glengowan should beat, them: both. I The result of the Trentham j Stakes wi come in for wide Australian interest in the next few weeks. It is quite likely that Glengowan. and Rose Mellay will run in the Sydney Cup at Easter. And connections of Battle Heights have also shown some interest in approaches by representatives of the A.J.C. to send their Wellington Cup winner across for the $lOB,OOO race.
