Boycott, eliminating all risks in an innings which lasted 9hr 25min, reached 261 not out by the declaration. His previous best scores were 260 not out, made for Yorkshire against Essex in the 1970 English county championship, and 243, for the M.C.C. against Barbados in 1968.
