LIFTING GOLD TO AUST.

Giving a spirited display of courage and explosive power, M. Adams won Australia’s first gold medal in the Games weight-lifting series when he took the bantamweight title in the James Hay Theatre last night. The slim, youthful Adams scored a surprise victory over his team-mate, I. Katz, who was the favourite to win.

Another slim young ’lifter, Y. Carignan, of Canada, won the silver medal on a bodyweight countback from the Indian, S. Vellaiswamy.

Adams scored a total of 222.5 kg. for the two lifts—the snatch and the clean and jerk. Carignan and Vellaiswamy both scored 212.5 kg.

Adams jumped high in the air after winning his final clean jerk of 125 kg. He waved with delight to the crowd and ran skipping and jumping from the platform to be raised high in the air in the arms of his Australian compatriots. Carignan also gave joyful signals after each successful lift.
