Finest wins
Bryan Purser and Mrs Robin Denton, of New Zealand, had their finest win as a mixed doubles combination when they beat the strong Malaysian pairing, Moo Foot Lian and Miss Rosalind Ang, 15-5, 17-14, in the first round of the Games badminton yesterday. They easily won the first game. Purser, in particular, was in very aggressive form, and although they had stronger opposition in the second game, the New Zealanders won in straight sets. New Zealand continued its run of success when the nat-
ional champions, Richard Purser and Mrs Alison Branfield, beat the Australian pair, Peter Cooper and Mrs Joan Jones, in a hard-fought, three-game match. The New Zealanders lacked understanding in the first game and, accordingly, they lost it easily. But they patched up the faults and won the next two. The host country’s luck was not with the other two mixed doubles combinations. Warren Jones and Mrs Glenys Waller, and Ross Livingston and Mrs Gaynor Weatherley, lost to Scottish pairings in straight games.
