All God's Chillun Got Wings, Desire Under the Elms, and Welded. By Eugene O’Neill. Cape. 281 pp.
Over the last 50 years. Cape have been continually issuing and reprinting the standard British edition of O’Neill’s plays; seven years ago they began re-issuing them as Cape paperbacks, to which series this is the latest addition. “Desire Under The Elms” is, of course, one of the great masterpieces of modern drama; it has affinities with Greek tragedy, especially in the claustrophobic intensity of its puritanical viciousness. The other two plays may be seen as O’Neill’s major statements on favourite themes: “All God’s Chillun” on the racial issue, and “Welded” an autobiographical treatment of a marriage conflict. As a whole, this volume is to be welcomed, but it is particularly good that “Welded” is included, a play that has not been easily available in paperback form previously.
