Record for decathlon in prospect
Scotsmen have a reputation for being hardy and this is upheld by the rankings in the most demanding of all contests on the Commonwealth Games track and field programme —the decathlon. Stewart McCallaum and Dave Kidner were the outstanding Commonwealth athletes in this event last season and will be chief rivals for the gold medal. McCallaum has a best score of 7401—only 91 points short of the Games record.
Kidner’s best performance last year was 7336 points. But he has the ability to improve on this, and a new record might result from the pressure he is likely to put on his team-mate.
New, Zealand’s main hope in this event is 27-year-old Mene Mene, who has yet to better 7000 points but is capable of doing so under intense competition.
