Shops provide Games TV
City streets were quiet yesterday afternoon, when shojjpers gathered in department stores or hotels to watch the opening of the Commonwait h Games, on television.
Most large department j stores provided a large numi her of black-and-white or I colour television sets. The I Bank of New Zealand, several electrical stores, and some hotels also provided viewing. At Beath’s, customers and assistants gathered around at. least 10 television sets, while at Ballantyne’s there; I were four colour sets and: ’five black-and-white ones.
! with groups of up to 30! (people around them. Miller’s also had sets in ’almost every' department of’ ■ its store. There were 12 black and white sets and: 1 two colour ones, which at-’ tracted a large audience. 1 There was a colour set at the Games information [centre in the Bank of New iZealand. and several black-land-white sets in other de-’ partmenls. Even the tellers were taking time out to watch. For those who wanted Isome refreshments while I I they watched, several city hotels provided their cus"-| [tomers with colour tele-' [vision. Group Rental Television: I displayed two colour sets, I land Bateman's Television’ .had four, which attracted! large audiences, including’ : two policemen who were' having a very quiet time patrolling the city streets. ! Some smaller shops, how- , ever, did not bother to pro- 1 vide television, but closed • their doors at 1 p.m. to en- , • able staff to go home to watch the ceremony. i
