Trading quiet on Aust, markets

Australian markets closed on a generally mixed note in quiet trading yesterday. However, selected issues put on some gains under good buying support. Rises and falls in the mining sector were evenly divided.

Peko-Wallsend dropped; 20c, Pan Continental took a 10c drop, and C.R.A. was, similarly weaker at 370 c. I B.H. South lost 8c at 260 c. ; G.M.K. suffered a 15c fall,; and Cons Goldfields lost 10c at 380 c. Hamersley was 7c firmer I and Emperor sold 10c higher. B.H.P. rose 15c to 1005 c. The retailers showed a marginal weakness, while the banks closed mainly firmer. T.N.T. recorded a 17c fall I to 163 c. Tooheys, Hooker j A.C.I. and A.P.M. were others : to ease.
