Precision cut
The Games opening ceremony depended largely for its success on militarily precise organisation. But the military precision began some 45 minutes before the start of the ceremony, a team of a dozen mustardjerseyed young men mowing the grass inside the arena.
“1 think Ron Scott was inspired by a similar performance in Mexico in 1968,” said Mr N. B. Ullrich, vice-chairman, public services, of the organising committee.
“They did extremely well. In groups of three they marched in line, about . turned smartly, marched again across the field, to colleagues who waited to replace their catchers with empty ones. The timing was excellent. “The grass did not really seem to need cutting. But it looked effective.”
