Late shopping disappointing

The additional late shopping night yesterday was a disappointment to employers and staff in central Christchurch.

All the big stores remained open until 9 p.m. but many smaller shops closed at 7

p.m. as the expected rush of customers did not eventuate.

Crowds of people — many of them young visitors carrying trampers’ packs — wandered around the central city streets.

At 8.15 p.m., a time during a normal late shopping night when taxis are busy, many taxis were on all ranks waiting for patrons. In Riccarton, shops were not any busier than on a normal Thursday late shopping night. The Northlands shopping area w'as closed, and St Albans shops were poorly patronised. The president of the Can-terbury-Westland Retailers’ Association (Mr E. J. McGregor) said that employers and staff were disappointed at the response to the services which shops had offered at the request of the Commonwealth Games Committee.

Shops in New Brighton will observe an extra late shopping night next Tuesday, January 29.
