TURNER’S CENTURY

HOBART. A sparkling century and some expert stage management by G. M. Turner, the New Zealand acting captain, produced a thrilling win for the tourists over Tasmania in the two-day cricket match yesterday.

Turner scored 101, his century coming from 117. balls, as he led New Zealand to 270 for six wickets in just ; over three hours and victory! with 10 balls to spare. Turner and J. M. Parker ( (57) gave the New Zealanders a flying start of 121 for the first wicket and the : target was reached in only 189 minutes from 39.6 overs. I GREAT SPECTACLE Even if it was a contrived decision, after three declarations, Turner’s splendid century, and the lively batting of the other New Zealanders turned what could have been a humdrum day into a splendid spectacle. The pitch was so placid that only an organised result was possible. During 11 hours of play, 725 runs were scored for only 16 wickets. The build-up to the drama of the late afternoon began in the first minutes of another gloriously fine day. J. F. Morrison and J. V. Coney hit 28 runs in three overs before Turner declared at 94 for two, conceding Tasmania a first innings lead of 112. Turner had taken the pre-

(From D. J. CAMERON) caution of making sure that [the Tasmanian skipper, J. j Simmons, would not enforce the follow-on if New Zealand declared more than 100 behind. ATTACKING DOOLAN I The pressure built up ; further as the Tasmanian [openers, B. Doolan and Sadiq [Mohammad, tore into the I New Zealand bowling. [Doolan put even the dashing [Sadiq in the shade as he! scored 52 of the opening ! stand of 76 in 55 minutes. Tasmania scored 157 fori [four wickets in two hours—l : and then threw the challenge back to New Zealand. After a quiet start, Turner j 'and Parker took six overs to! ! catch up with the seven-runs-! ,an-over rate, but once there! they kept up the pace bril- 1 jliantly—so in 35 minutes,! 1100 in 66. By tea, at 119, [ I they were precisely on target I after 17 overs. SECOND HUNDRED Sadiq stopped their .triumphant charge by dis.imissing Parker, and by the II time New Zealand reached .[the last 15 overs it needed 1193. Turner, hitting high for the gaps beyond the widespread • field, went from 93 to 99 with a six off Sadiq over i [ mid-wicket, and then tickled i a single from the next ball ■lfor his century—his second . in the two tour matches in . this state. He hit 11 fours ■ and a six in his 126-minute 1! century. . I Then he showed that he ■ was fallible, dancing out to I Sadiq and being stumped. ■ I Coney hit hard but was run

out at 204 for three, Morrison slammed a four and six off consecutive balls from 1. Appleton, and 50 runs were needed in the last nine overs. Morrison went at 232 for four, M. J. Shrimpton became Sadiq’s fourth victim at 243 for five, but K. O. Campbell cracked five fours and G. D. Alabaster wasted no time in hitting the winning run. TASMANIA First innings 206/4 dec.
