FORCE FOR OIL

Ford denies plans

(N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Jan. 14.

Vice-President Gerald Ford today firmly denied the existence of plans for American military intervention in the Middle East to. ensure normal oil supplies. Interviewed on British television, Mr Ford said: “I know of no responsible American [ leader who is saying that ' military force would be util- ' ised to obtain oil from the Middle East, I think that is ’ preposterous. I would J strongly oppose it. “I think we have other ; methods of taking care of ■ our military capability and our domestic economy. “We may have to tighten 1 up our belt, as people in Bri- ' tain are doing today, and we may have to tighten that belt seriously, but I see no reason, no justification at all, : for any military force to obtain oil from the Middle East.”
