Tourist licence and town houses scheme

A new scheme for a development of the Deans Avenue-Darvel Street-Matai Street block on which the Chateau Commodore Hotel is being built has been submitted to the Riccarton Borough Council.

The original scheme, for which the Riccarton Borough Council gave town-planning approval more than two years ago, was for the construction of what was to be known as the Park Royale Hotel, and it was intended to have this completed in time for the Commonwealth Games.

Instead, the approval was allowed to lapse, and the council subsequently approved a development of part of the block as the Chateau Commodore Hotel. Last November, when the council was due to hear a , town-planning application : from Chateau Commodore (Hotels), Ltd. for permission to have licensed premises in the form of a tavern on Deans Avenue, the company ; withdrew at the last minute, i Many objections had been j received. I The council has now received an application for I town-planning approval for :what the company terms a I comprehensive development lof the block. It is now untended to build 55 town houses on the Matai Street frontage, over about a quarter of the block. The houses will be of two and three-storey construction. in irregularly arranged blocks round a central patio.

Application has not yet been made for aoproval for the balance of the scheme, which, the council has been told, involves an extension to the bedroom accommodation

at the Chateau Commodore Hotel, and the building of a central bar and lounges, associated with a tourist house licence.

Objections to the town house proposals will close with the council on February 11. The council will then set a date for the hearing of submissions and objections. When applications are made for approval for the rest, of the scheme a similar procedure will be followed.
