Young shipmaster back in port

There is no more friendly shipmaster than Captain Gunther jvon Oertzen of H.A.P.A.G.iLlovd’s speedy passenger cargo 'liner Bayernstein (“castle in Bavaria”), now discharging North European general cargo at Cashin Quay, and loading refrigerated and general cargo for j return. Aged 38. Captain von Oertzen, who is married. with three children. is one of the youngest ship--1! masters in the huge German comjbine of Hamburg Amerika Line and Norddeutscher Lloyd. i No stranger to Lyttelton. CapI tain von Oertzen is fluent in English. Formerly a Norddeutscher Lloyd officer, he originally trained in the barque Passat, a • sister to the familiar Pamir. He ! first came to Lyttelton as chief ;■ officer of the Weserstein in 1969. Captain von Oertzen recalls • that he next came here as master I of the Rothenstein. and was later in command of the TannIstein. Recently, 'he has commanded large container vessels, 'but he is happy to be back in ! conventional carriers. The Bayernstein is one of a lifew remaining cargo vessels carrying a limited number of I passengers (6). She also carries ,12 seamen trainees tin addition to her normal complement), who will ultimately become “inte'grated crew,” particularly for container vessels. They will be equipped to serve on deck or in the engine-room. Modern seafaring is more! enlightened than 40 years ago. and crew members see much I more of countries they visit. For instance, a motor coach, containing some officers crew members, two officers’ wives, and the ship’s carpenter’s wife, visited Akaroa yesterday. They recently visited Rotorua, and in the next port. Timaru, will visit Mount Cook. i In command of the first naval, vessel to arrive for the duration of the Games, was Lieuten-ant-Commander A. P. C. Whitley, a Scot aged 45, who was I trained at the naval college at Dartmouth. Aboard H.M.N.Z.S., Inverell yesterday, a former! Bathurst-class minesweeper, but now a fishery patrol and training vessel, Lieutenant-Commander; Whitley, said he lives at Devon-| port, in Auckland. H.M.N.Z.S. Inverell brought 20 ratings from H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury as passengers, and they and another 25 members of Inverell’s complement will participate in ceremonial activities at the Games. Since last visiting Lyttelton, H.M.N.Z.S. Inverell has visited the Chathams on fishery patrol, and on her southbound passage, performed similar duties. r): £: Meanwhile, Lyttelton is sprucing itself up and bracing itself for the Games. At No. 4 Wharf, which will be temporarily ■’home” for H.M.Y. Britannia and H.M.N.Z.S. Canterbury, there is much activity, including the erec- • tion of a welcoming dais, and hoisting of banners.
