Many more British people are applying to emigrate, mainly because of the fuel shortage and the emergency: three-dav week, reports the] !“Daily Mail.” At the same time, there (has been a marked drop in (the number of immigrants arriving in Britain — particularly from the West Indies, the newspaper says. Most people looking for a way out of the gloom want to go to Australia. New Zealand, or Canada. Last month, New Zealand House received 15,359 appli- ; cations to migrate, compared with 4858 in December. 1972. “The rate for January seems! even higher,” a New Zealand; House spokesman said. At times, the New Zealand i House switchboard has been jammed, and there have been (queues at the immigration! counter. The Australian and Canadian High Commissions also say there has been much ( greater interest in migration. l
