National croquet final
The young Christchurch player, R. Murfitt, confirmed his promise in croquet with a straight-games win against G. Rowling (Nelson) in the final of the New Zealand open title in Christchurch yesterday. In the first game against Rowling, Murfitt scored his i sixth triple peel of the tour- ! nament — the most recorded by any competitor. Murfitt. who also topIscored with double peels, had played with sustained accuracy to beat the redoubtable IR. V. Jackson (Auckland) in one semi-final, again in straight games. 1
Rowling gained some compensation by overwhelming Murfitt in the men’s championships. He won the title by beating A. Anderson (Manawatu), 26-23, in an exciting final.
