Big crowds on beaches
There were large crowds at beaches near Christchurch yesterday, but surf patrolmen reported that no difficulties had been encountered. Swimmers were well behaved. At Corsair Bay, there was a record crowd of about 2000. Most beaches had an attendance of more than 200. and at Taylor’s Mistake in the late afternoon there were at least 200 bathers in the water and another 200 on the beach. North-westerly winds, which became strong later in the day. had the effect of flattening the waves, patrolmen said, and most beaches had little more than a 3ft surf. A slight southerly drift was reported on beaches on Pegasus Bay, but patrolmen said that this would affect only bathers using lilos; they needed to be very careful in drifts and strong winds.
