“Unqualified” head to retire
Officially untrained and uncertificated for any teaching post, Mr H. H. Craig, of Auckland, will retire at the end of the month after more than 30 years as a teacher or school principal, and a further six years as Northern Regional Superintendent of Education. responsible for 45 per cent of the country's educational institutions.
Mr Craig taught at Christchurch Boys’ High School (1935-37), Rotorua High School (1937-49),'and Whaka--1 tane High School (1950-54), and has been principal of ' Frevberg High School. Palmerston North (1955-61) and recor of King's High School, Dunedin (1962-66). But he never attended a teacher’s college and is officially not qualified for a teaching post. , He applied to enter the
Christchurch Teachers’ College secondary division in 1935, but because of the economic conditions there was a quota of only 20 entrants for the South Island. There had been none for the previous year. Mr Craig was not chosen and returned to university to add a bachelor of science degree to the master of arts degree he already had.
