Canterbury bid fails

Canterbury and Wellington ran neck and neck with points on the final day of the Hally burton Johnstone women’s cricket tournament on Saturday. Wellington fin-
ally triumphed. Canterbury chased the runs against Otago, gaining eight batting points and then declaring. Otago made a valiant second-innings bid, its 100 coming up in 90 minutes, but Canterbury was not to be denied and had an outright victory and 21 match points.
North Shore found the Wellington bowling strength and positive batting too much, Wellington gained 18 match points and deservedly won the shield.
Final points: Wellington 50, Canterbury 42, North Shore 27, Auckland 25, Otago 23.
