Mrs Young improves Games ranking in shot put

s The evergreen Canterbury field events athlete, Mrs V. I. Young (Technical), *; moved up two places io fourth equal in the Commonwealth ranking list for the shot when 3 she recorded a fine throw of 15,05 m (49ft 4-}in) during an inter-club meeting at Queen '‘ Elizabeth 11 Park on Saturday. Mrs Young is a former Commonwealth Carnes gold h medallist in both the shot put and discus throw. “S . _ ......

It was Mrs Young’si' best put since her comeback two years ago, and an indication that she will once again be & I strong medal prospect at J the Commonwealth Games later this month. ' She was later named as ■ the Farmers’ ‘‘Athlete of the ' Week” for her performance. Mrs Young's best Games f performance in the shot put, of 16.50 m (54ft tin), still stands as the Games record. Her strongest rival on Sat-f iurday was another Common--I wealth Games team member. (Mrs S. Mene (Technical), who made a put of 12.28 m (40ft, >3Jin). In the discus throw, the positions were reversed. Mrs ,Mene winning with a throw of 47.28 m. Mrs Young’s best: (distance was 43.30 m. SPRINT RACES The New Zealand women’sj 100 m champion, Mrs W. Brown (New Plymouth), bettered the New Zealand record for this distance with a run of 11.5 sec. This was 0.1 sec faster than the time i set by Miss B. Matthewsl (Auckland) almost seven: iyears ago. However, Mrs Brown’s I time cannot gain official recognition because it was set racing against a male athlete, P. Wilkinson (Otago). - Wilkinson won the race in ' ll.lsec. Later in the day, Mrs>i Brown won the 200 m in 1 23.95ec, another outstanding J] run. Mrs S. Gukiiau (Auck- ? land) was second in 24.75ec. T. Cochrane (Old Boys) ' dominated the senior men’s J sprints with two impressive ' wins. He won the 60m in ;:6.7sec, with his fellow Games j representative, G. Anderson .: (Old Boys), second in 6.Bsec. s-In the 200 m, Cochrane won, 'jin the good time of 21.7 sec, i with Anderson again second,’ in 21.8 sec. MILLS FAMILY L. R. Mills (Auckland): ’ again showed that he is still a; ' world-class shot putter with: j a mighty throw of 17.67 ml J (57ft 11 |in). Immediately: ( afterwards, the convener of | (the New Zealand track and I .‘.field selection panel (Mr B. ; Hunt, of Taranaki) was in-! formed by telephone of the || performance. He indicatedthat a further application on j Mills’s behalf would be made ’■ to the Commonwealth Games ’(selectors. Mills’s throw, which came ‘ at his fifth attempt, was almost. 4ft 6in greater than the original Games selection P standard, and places him ” ninth on the Commonwealth i .tanking list. ’ His son. Phillip Mills, re- , cently added to the Games ' team, was narrowly beaten in the 110 m hurdles by the [ . Dunedin hurdler, S. Arrnii tage, in 14.8 sec. Neverthe■i less, the performance was >. not good enough for Armitage to gain late selection. ( He was one of several nomir nations rejected by the n Games selection panel. Miss D. Mills, who is 16. comfortably won the wo-

I men’s high jump with a leap |of 1.55 m (sft lin). The 400 m hurdles was almost a duplicate of the New Zealand championship final. R. V. Johnson (Otago) won the event in the good time of 52.25ec, with R. Mclntosh (Old Boys) and S. Gukiiau (Fiji) equal second, in 52.6 sec. The form of all three athletes was impressive, but Johnson gained his winning edge in the first half of the race. The Canterbury junior 3000 m steeplechase title was won by D. Greig (New Brighton) in 9min 38.4 sec. This was 6sec faster than J. D. 'Macdonald (Olympic) achieved in winning the senior inter-club steeplechase. The Commonwealth Games : distance runner. P. Watson i(New Brighton), was untroubled to win the 5000 m in 14min 21sec.
