(from Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. I he 1974 Rothmans Westland provincial clay target championships last week attracted a record entry of 70 shooters from many parts of the South Island. The first championship contested was the skeet title, and in the difficult conditions only two shooters managed to record a possible — L. Hastie (Twizel) and M. Tindale (Rapahoe). In the’ shoot-off Hastie emerged the victor when Tindale missed his eighth target. The double-rise championship proved to be one of only two titles to remain on the West Coast. This was won outright by J. Havili (Kowhitirangi) who shot 19 out of the possible 20. 1. Bell (Christchurch) was the runner-up. Twelve possibles were recorded in the Rothmans trophy match, and P. Askey (Belfast) took the trophy at the ninety-second target. In the clay sparrow championship seven possibles were recorded by S. Everett (Christchurch), L. Hastie, A. Walker (Waimate). R. Everett (Mead Te Pirita) and A. Brown (Lauder). Elliott won the shoot-off. T. Everett (Belfast) became the single barrel champion in one of the best shoot-offs of the championships. Three others shooters, J. Hedley (Southland), S. Holmes (Methven) and A. Black jnr (North Canterbury) also recorded possibles.

Hastie became the 1974 high gun champion, having shot 99 out of the possible 105 targets, the Bearman High Gun Trophy, the Kokatahi Greenstone Badge, and the Kokatahi cash award. The final event of the tournament was the Kokatahi Shield teams match, and this was won by the Waimate team with a fine display of shooting, recording 74 out of the possible 75.
