Ancient ghosts
Some Things Strange and Sinister. Edited by Joan Kahn. Bodley Head. 245 pp. Who likes ghost stories? Probably most of us, from time to time, which is what makes this collection of gruesome stories a most acceptable Christmas gift. H. G. Wells, Agatha Christie, Algernon Blackwood, and Andre Maurois are among the writers included in this book. None of the stories are modern, although many of the 14 may be new to readers. But then, there is something timeless about the genre, and the quaint and dated backgrounds make the tales doubly unreal. This is the kind of book which whole families can enjoy, from children of ten to aged grandmothers, .as long as their hearts are still strong.
