Catamaran nose-dives

(N.Z. Press Association)

BLENHEIM. The Rothmans national catamaran championship series at Picton has had its biggest upset of the week. The all-out B-class leader, Boadicea, was smashed in a 25-knot squall during yesterday morning’s open race. The craft was sailed by K. and N. McKinven, of Auckland, who were unhurt. Their boat caught the gust while running before the wind on the course’s last triangle. Boadicea was pushed to the limit of its speed and nosedived into the sea. In the rough conditions Twin-Spinner (J. Gough, Christchurch) retired, and Bettina (A. Geddes and D. Pullman, Auckland) and Smokey (S. Henderson, Christchurch) capsized. The Iron Butterfly (C. Timms and L. Hope), Wellington) won the race, followed by Clyde T (A. Brown and M. McLaughlan) and the A-class Charger (M. Haddon), both of Wellington.
