75 of arrested in Paparua Prison

Of the 81 persons arrested by Christchurch police in a raid on a house at 71 Kerrs Road on Sunday evening, 75 are still in Paparua Prison awaiting their second court appearance tomorrow.

One of those arrested was a juvenile defendant and has been dealt with under Children’s Court procedure, and five defendants have been released on bail.

Another 24 of those at Paparua Prison are entitled to bail, but have been unable to supply’ satisfactory sureties. Arrangements are proceeding in respect of two of them who might be released today if sureties are forthcoming. All defendants appeared before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., at a special sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at the!

Central Police Station on Monday, and each was charged under the Crimes Act with taking part in an unlawj ful assembly "likely to cause persons in the neighbourhood to fear on reasonable grounds ■ that the persons assembled would disturb the peace tumultuously.” Mr M.
