MELBOURNE.
The engaged Americans. J. Connors and Miss C. Evert both reached the semi-finals of the Australian open tennis championships yesterday.
In their singles quarter-finals yesterday, Connors beat V. Zednik (Czechoslovakia). 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 and Miss Evert defeated her countrywoman. Miss J. Newberry, 6-2. 64.
Connors will meet the winner between the two Australians, J. Alexander and R. Giltinan. Poor light stopped play in their match, with Alexander leading, 6-1 5-7, 5-1.
Miss Evert’s semi-final opponent is another American, Miss J. Heldman, who beat Mrs L. Hunt (Australia), 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
