Harkness awards

Recipients of Harkness fellowships for 1974 are Miss Margaret Parkinson, charge .tutor of the Department of 'Nursing Education in Rotorua. and Mr A. J. Warrington, a scientist group leader in the Plant Physiology Division of the Department of Scientific land Industrial Research in Palmerston North. This is the third time in the last lour years that New Zealanders have gained two, ,of the five fellowships granted each year to Australia and New Zealand The Harkness fellowships .provide for study and travel; ifor up to 21 months in the i United States. They are ioffered by the Commonwealth (Fund of New York, a philantropic foundation, to give i outstanding young men and ,women aged under 30 the jchance to further their education and become familiar! with the people and culture of the United States.

Miss Parkinson holds the Advanced Diploma of Nurs-

ing. and this year, after five years of largely part-time work, she gained her bachelor of social science degree at the of Waikato. She intends to do postgraduate study, with a special reference to the needs of New Zealand’s nursing education

Mr Warrington, a graduate of Massey University, with a bachelor of horticultural jscience degree and a mastei ate with first-class honours. ;was made responsible in 1969 ifor the commissioning of a (climate laboratory for biologiseal research projects. He plans to study horn (Culture and crop production 'marketing and management ■in the United States. Previous recipients of th? iHarkness fellowship have in (eluded Dr A. T. Johns, the Director-General of Agri culture. Mr J. Robertson, the 'Secretary of Defence, and Mr 'M. J. Moriarty, a former Sec jretary of Industries and Com Imerce.
