MAGISTRATE’S COURT Stolen property sold to dealers

Barry Peter O’Shea, aged 17, unemployed (Mr R. J. Aldous), was convicted on his plea of guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to two charges of theft. He was fined $75 and released on probation for 12 months by Mr P. L. Molineaux, S.M. Detective Sergeant T. O. Tozer said that O’Shea took a picnic basket valued at $25, belonging to his mother and sold it to a second-hand dealer on November 5, for $4.50. On November 15 he sold a stereo-cassette recorder and microphones, valued at $lB7, which he had on hire purchase, for $BO to another dealer.

Both the picnic basket and the cassette recorder had been recovered. The microphone, valued at $25, had not been recovered.

Mr Aldous said that the defendant needed money, and did not realise that he had no right to sell the cassette recorder. He committed the offences on impulse. STOLE CAR David James Tyson, aged 24, a stainless steel worker (Mr M. J. Glue), was remanded on bail to December 28 for sentence when he was convicted on a charge of theft of a car valued at $175. Evidence was given that Tyson and two others took the car from the Northern Motorway where it was parked, and towed it to Tyson’s flat. It was sold to a wrecker for $5O, which Tyson and a friend shared. Tyson said that he thought the vehicle was abandoned and that he was within his rights to take it. CHARGES Vaughan Stewart Thomas, aged 22, a truck-driver (Mr M. J. Glue), was convicted on charges of unlawfully taking a car, theft of clothing and photographic equipment worth $561, and theft of sunglasses worth $5. He pleaded not guilty.

The defendant was remanded on bail to December 28 for sentence. OBSTRUCTION

On a charge of obstructing a constable on October 26, Douglas Sidney Low, aged 20, a workman (Mr G. M. Brodie), was convicted and placed on probation for one year and fined $5O. He pleaded guilty.

Detective Sergeant Tozer said Low attempted to pull the constable away from a person being assisted into an ambulance after a motor accident in Gloucester Street about 8.25 p.m. The injured person was Low’s friend.

The Magistrate said it was Low’s third conviction for obstructing the police. (Before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M.)
