Medicines may be scarce
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 19.
Medicines could be scarce if the oil crisis continued, said the president of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (Mr G. T. Bethell) in Auckland today. Many of the active materials used in medicine manufacture were synthesised from oil by-products, and other ingredients were petroleum-based; some were already scarce, he said. New Zealand companies importing medicines were being hit by shortages of raw materials overseas. In the United States the association had called on the Government to establish priorities to ensure adequate supplies of medicine.
