REPLY TO GAMES CRITICS
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Criticism of the Commonwealth Games selectors was answered yesterday by the chairman of the Olympic and British Commonwealth Games Association (Mr C. L. S. Cross).
"There is a difference of opinion about whether the association’s selectors should set a standard, but in a small country such as ours, without great depth, the association’s belief is that only those who reach the set standard should compete in Olympic or Commonwealth Games,” he said. “The selection standards set had been agreed to by all sports represented on the association.
“Some people say we should put young people with potential into the teams. The association does not think it is fair to put. people like this into top international .competition just for experience."
“In fact, this could breed discouragement for the young athlete beaten into last place in the first round of the sprints or a young swimmer finishing last in the first heat,” Mr Cross said.
