PAPANUI DECIDES Invitation refused

Canterbury will not enter a team in the invitation men’s club softball tournament in Carterton next month.

The only interested club, Papanui, has revisted its opinion because of the costs. The president, Mr M. Reid, said that if the club travelled to Carterton, it had to guarantee to the Canterbury association that it would also be available to compete in the national John Lennon tournament.

"Two trips by the one team would have been too costly, so now we will try hard to qualify for the Lennon tournament, and organise a less-expensive trip for the whole club at the end of the season,” he said. The organiser of the Carterton tournament, the Douglas Villa club, had originally invited Canterbury to send three teams for the event from January 12 to 13, but the other leading teams, Richmond, United and Western Suburbs, refused the invitation.
