Speedway agrees to fuel-saving moves
(N.Z. Press Association! WELLINGTON. The Minister of Energy Resources (Mr Freer) yesterday welcomed moves by speedway promoters to save fuel by imposing a number of voluntary restraints.
Some tracks will close for at least three to four weeks over the holiday period, and others, which are heavily committed financially or are bringing overseas competitors, will cut their number of meetings by 25 per cent during the season.
Other proposed steps include a reduction in the number of races by about 10 per cent at each meeting, the urging of patrons to attend events by the most economical means, and tracks serviced by public transport to start meetings earlier so that patrons can use public transport to go home. The moves follow a meeting Mr Freer held last week with representatives of the speedway control board and the promoters.
f ‘l am delighted with their rapid and public spirited response to my request for fuel economies,’’- Mr Freer said.
