Play centre too dear

When the Heathcote County Council last evening considered tenders ranging from $68,241 to $90,510 for the construction of the Hollies Avenue play-centre, it was agreed that the cost was prt hibitive, and the council called off a project that has been talked about for two years and a half.

The. chairman (Mr J. Somers) said a meeting had been held with the playcentre committee, which was not keen to come in on the project. The feeling was that there should be a community centre, but not at that cost. The project was “off” and a meeting would be held in February to discuss a community centre, and the council would consider a modified scheme.

Cr E. L. Tyndall said the council should not abandon the project. Perhaps a subsidy could be obtained. The original estimate was about $30,000, said Mr Somers. Cr J. S. Scott said it was absurd to abandon the scheme and waste thousands of dollars in architect’s fees. The council decided to abandon the scheme, and to ask the architect (Mr W. T. Royal) to let it have his bill. The staff was asked to prepare plans for an alternative.
