Sixfold increase
The Indian Government has announced a sixfold increase in the price of fur-! nace oil, in an attempt to reduce the consumption of foreign ships calling at Indian ports. Furnace oil was selling at 5U538.30 a ton in Bombay, and at SUS4L76 a: ton in Calcutta—New Delhi, December 19.
French innovation
Work is in an advanced stage on a top-secret, hydro-gen-powered car engine developed by the French car manufacturer, Renault. The development work has been done jointly by Renault and the French oil research company, Institute Francais de Petroles.—Paris, December 19.
Japanese moves
Japan’s bars, night-clubs, restaurants, cinemas, and other entertainment centres will be asked to close down at 11 p.m. to save electricity because of the oil shortage. The decision has been made by Cabinet Ministers who are also considering a move to adopt daylight-saving time all the year round.—Tokyo, December 19.

Petrol dearer
The price of petrol in Fiji will rise by at least 5c a gallon either on January 1 or before, according to usually reliable sources in Suva. Petrol now costs 51c a gallon on Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu.—Suva, December 19.
