Australia in Davis Cup final
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Australia has clinched its position as challenger to the United States in the final of the Davis Cup in Cleveland on November 30. The veteran R. Laver beat the young J. Hrebec, of Czechoslovakia, in the decisive third rubber of the Cup semi-final yesterday. Laver won 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 64. This gave Australia an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the series of five matches, and J. Newcombe finishing off the final rubber with a victory over J. Kodes, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4. After the first two singles had been shared on Friday. Australia struck the vital blow on Saturday when Laver and K. Rosewall beat Kodes and K. Zednik, 6-4, 4-12, 7-9, 8-6.
