Scatter wins road walk
An 18-year-old junior, G. Seatter (High School Old Boys), comfortably won the Canterbury senior 20 kilometres road walk championship, held on Saturday over nine laps of a block course which ended at the Ham track. He covered the distance in Ihr 51min 23sec and afterwards said that he was quite satisfied with this in view of the training he had been able to do. Because of university examinations, he had only done two weeks of walking in preparation for the event. “My legs turned to jelly about three miles from the finish,” he said, explaining his rapid decline in pace towards the end of the race. The runner-up was J. Hinton (Christchurch) in Ihr 58min 19sec. RECORDS Two under-15 records were broken during the selection trials at Ham. N. C. Lewis (Geraldine) established a new Canterbury shot record of 15.11 metres (49ft Tin). The previous record of 47ft lOin was set seven years ago by D. J. May (Old Boys). Lewis was chosen as the Farmers’ “Athlete of the Week” for iiis effort. The other record came in the girls under 15 high jump when Miss S. Rudd (Toe H) cleared the bar at 1.56 metres (sft ijin). This bettered the previous record, held by Miss L. Cole, by a quarter of an inch.
