New directory in use tomorrow

The new telephone directory comes into use at 9.30 p.m. tomorrow and to assist in the change the public has been asked by the Post Office not to use the telephone between 9.25 p.m. and 9.35 p.m. unless an urgent call is required.

The introduction of the new directory will mean a change of number for more than 4000 subscribers. With the establishment of the new exchange of Avonhead a new group of numbers will be brought into use. These numbers begin with 42 and persons with these numbers, and those calling them, will notice several changes. For example, an Avonhead subscriber must begin dialling within 10 seconds of getting the dial tone otherwise the call will not pro-, ceed, and the dialler will!

hear the overflow tone. The call will also not proceed if there is more than a slight pause between the dialling lot each digit. When dialling is finished (there will be a short pause ibefore the ringing tone is ■ heard. The Post Office advises that the handset should be replaced promptly when a call is over.

The Post Office emphasises that the old directory should be user, until 9.30 p.m. tomorrow. In the last fhe weeks more than 240.000 new directories have (been issued to subscribers in Christchurch.
