Not to exempt genuine pro-1 ductivity deals from the pre-i sent wage freeze could in-; hibit increases in productiv-' ity, said the Minister of Labour (Mr Watt) today. Last night Mr Watt said that the Cabinet had agreed to regulations which outline the exemption. Mr Watt said today that this was not an open invitation for workers to renegotiate awards, and unions would have to prove that any agreements were soundly | based on genuine increases in I production. “We want to encourage increased productivity and if we don’t do this we are likely to inhibit it.” Mr Watt said it will be over to the Wages Tribunal to consider individual claims for exemption.
