Photography exhibition

“Kosmic Conscience” is the i title given by Murray Hedwig, to an exhibition of his photographs being held at the, Society of Arts; Gallery. Born in Christchurch in 1949, Mr Hedwig studied at; j Nelson College and the Uni-: iversity of Canterbury School; lof Fine Arts, gaining a dip-, Toma with honours in 1973.; ■ He presents a variety of i subjects including landscapes, still life, architectural and life; i showing a particular predi-i 'lection for landscape. His subjects are chosen imore to convey a feeling or mood and if his exhibition succeeds in generating an over-all response it is one of loneliness conveyed through dark West Coast skies, peeling weatherboards, odd news flash types of photography with heavy graining, an old cobweb-covered wheel in the corner of a shed, unpeopled landscape views seen through windows in houses that have known better days, a wall of graffiti, a wall of a burnt house, an old house and dead dree at Birdlings Flat, and; so on. He also employs to good 1 effect repetition shots of the same subject at a different moment in time. No. 34. “Wall/Passing People.” is such a work with four repeats showing a man walking past a brick wall, a man running past, a car going by, and a blurred close-up of a person passing, all of which 1 seems to add up to man’s; indifference to that which is common place to him. The exhibition will remain open until November 21. —G.T.M.I
